i always enjoyed reading reader's digest. all around helpful and informative. last month's issue (with harrison ford on the cover) featured a family who was luckily able to fight off an intruder in their house. this got me all paranoid, and one of the main tips was to have a plan, and stick to it. you either fight, or do /give what they want. but whatever it is, stick to it and make sure the rest of your family knows. zk and i spent the whole night deliberating the options. debating even (he was for giving, i was for fighting). but in the end i realized mine was a silly option. i'm not even trained physically for these things. so my "punches" or "kicks" might just aggrevate the intruder and do more harm. i just don't like the thought that you are giving / doing what this bad guy wants without a fight. but like zk said, how much is your life worth?
while its hard to call for police/help/ambulance when an intruder is already inside the house, i wish there was a discreet buzzer that a homeowner has within reach, or something that doesn't look like it will call for help.
especially if you live somewhere far, or if unfortunately, intense damage and harm has already been done to a family member and you'd need a medivac to get them to safety.
It's also good to know which companies offer these services. Aerocare Services offers emergency and non-emergency services THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. can you imagine that.
domestic disturbance thoughts aside, this is very helpful when you go traveling, as not all travel insurance offer medevac services. true story: after a boozed up decision to get a tattoo in the streets of bangkok, this aussie guy finds his leg swollen and infected after getting the ink. it's gotten so bad (because bangkok doctors sliced it open to let the infection out, which i think wasn't the right thing to do in his skin condition). it got so bad that he eventually was med-evacuated to darwin.
having said all these though, would you believe that i NEVER EVER took travel insurance when i traveled before? yes, im one of those 'it can't happen to me' people. nothing has ever happened anyway. but now that i'm aware of the probable things, this is definitely something to think about.
